A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.
