The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
