Sheffield Wednesday Deals with Major Issues, States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the regulator's chair

The team's persistent issues constitute a "serious issue" and the independent regulator is seeking powers to investigate clubs in such situations, the recently named head the regulator has announced.

During an extensive discussion, the chairman, who was recently selected, expressed "sympathy" towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations representing the South Yorkshire club recently.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a substantial concern for English football," Kogan told.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for football in England and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they need to be investigated and acted upon."

Monetary Issues and Proprietorship Status

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be open to selling the club at the stadium, but he has failed to complete a sale with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months led to sanctions by the English Football League (EFL) in June, preventing the club from carrying out any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in late summer.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the Owls followers, teams facing challenges where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or been close to going to the wall, for causes separate from the supporters."

When asked if the oversight body could require an proprietor to divest a club if they are considered unfit, Kogan said: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an individual club, an particular chairman, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you look back over the history of the game, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, a small minority, but particular people who have shown negligence in the manner they have operated their organizations and finally decline to assume obligation for the long-term prospects."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The chairman convened with representatives from 110 clubs to lay out the remit of the authority recently and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if errors are made, if the sport makes errors, the significant advances achieved might evaporate swiftly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the terms of English football is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has come into football for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on challenges and obviously, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the formation of an authority because of concerns about detrimental effects on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the top division.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the top flight as an elite competition of the nation. But at the same time, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Partisan Associations

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in 2020.

The official contributed funds to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any type of partisan engagement."
