The Evolution of a Cult can be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Core Concept

A dominant personality or leaders introduce an innovative concept offering a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to confront the system in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the out-houses. An isolated player, naked, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has emerged through the lines and is being led away under a blanket towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you recall the early days, when everything was fresh? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Team architects guarantee a fresh beginning, a brighter tomorrow, love, success among a group united in belief in the method.

What did it represent initially? A team united feeling good. Tattoos. Forearms. Determination. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, England’s players will claim it’s not a real term, ironically since it’s not recognized, what did we see?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the leader in ultimate mode, a look that says: pensive Nordic god, beard made of wood, natural look, truly contemporary you almost imagine to glance over and see him playing at mid-off stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s the opener often seen to talk in press conferences, appearing as a cheerful animal smartly dressed, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the energy, for quite a long time, was only good energy.

3. The Growth Phase

Growth phase. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of key phrases. These ideas may seem irrational as a test of “true belief”.

Am I alone? The criticism, the fury, the feeling of letdown following the initial loss seems too strong, overdone. The batting collapsed during the match, as history shows. They were savaged defensively in a short span as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, carved around by Travis Head imitating their style effectively, adjusting to the pitch, a performer excelling with aura.

Now there is the attacks, the anger, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the simple basics of the bowler, marking successes with a bashful smile as if receiving a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Challenges surface due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It starts to feed on hatred of the outside world.

The fact remains, approaching the upcoming game, we are at a delicious point of tension in the lifespan of this approach. Victory is possible overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. More likely, failure may follow. Should they fail it appears we may see the decline.

Ahead of this, there are two things to note about this. Previously, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. Criticism followed, which demonstrated since it’s clear how to confirm something definitely isn’t a cult is when its acolytes send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

Recent events recently are equally notable. Criticism of the approach is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, angry English pundits, images of frustrated followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration towards the unconventional visitors, claiming, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, it’s not serious ultimately.

This is the core issue. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon because cricket is a cult. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, an elite gathering, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history behind it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the British pastime of England, the pioneering brand. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The players have been isolated in this environment from a young age. Seeking change, to create a less brutal environment, they are simply replicating their upbringing, building another enclosure, a limited community, but doing it this time with a modern squad and a leader who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.

Live where your feet are. Confront risks. However much you change, things stay similar.
