Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
